GARRETT MACNAMARA – REAL EXTREME!
2011. Ocean coast of Portugal. A surrealistic picture worthy of the brush of the best masters of this genre – a huge wave 24 meters high rushes to land at a speed of 50 km / h, and a tiny human figure is visible on its crest, gliding across the thickness of water on a funny plaque. A moment – and the stranger flies down the steep, changeable wall, so that after a while, as if nothing had happened, appear on the shore with a broad smile on his tanned face. Let me introduce – this is Garrett McNamara, a surfer with pronounced extreme inclinations, and just now, he has set a world achievement, which will soon be fixed on the pages of the Guinness Book of Records!
A native of Massachusetts, McNamara surfed at the age of 11 following her older brother. It was back in 1978 in Hawaii. He came and stayed. Quite soon, his surname was on the list of participants in the famous and prestigious Triple Crown of Surfing surfer tournament, and in 1984, a 17-year-old man trusted himself in the care of world-famous Japanese companies who saw the prospect in a guy and were not afraid to put big names in his name money by becoming sponsors of McNamara. Apparently, in gratitude for the once shown self-confidence, Garrett mastered the Japanese language and decently speaks it.
The life of an athlete is constantly traveling to places of competitions and championships. This fate did not escape the young surfer, who gained invaluable experience in international competitions. But to ride the waves like everyone else – obviously this was not part of Garrett’s plans. The last decade of the outgoing 20th century, McNamara has been actively trying himself in the then-gaining tau-surfing – a very dangerous occupation, which, subsequently, will glorify his name on the whole planet. The essence of tau-surfing was to catch gigantic waves using boats equipped with powerful engines that drove the surfer to the wave, “threw” the athlete to its top and left to the side. Not all wave tamers ventured to do such numbers, and Garrett was one of the pioneers of mega extreme movement.
2002 – 2003 years. McNamara is once again the center of attention for all fans of surfing. First, together with his partner, he wins the largest cash prize in such competitions at the World Cup in surfing – 70 thousand dollars. The athlete tore this jackpot on the furious waves of the Jaws beach on the island of Maui. A year later, in the same place, Garrett performed a trick that almost cost him health: a surfer burst into a funnel formed by a wave of six meters! Fortunately, everything ended successfully, and the restless American again thought about further adventures.
He found them off the coast of Alaska, where he went in 2007 to “saddle” the waves that arise there due to the shedding of glaciers. Garrett tried to convey his impressions and emotions in the documentary “Glacier Project”. And after a while there was that triumphal soar on the 78-foot wave at the Portuguese town of Nazare. However, McNamara himself considered that he deserved more, and already at the end of January 2013, off the coast of Portugal, the same wave capitulated to him 30 meters high! This fact has not yet been reflected in official sources.
What is Garrett McNamara doing now? Actually, everything is the same as always – it catches the waves and makes them recognize themselves defeated. In addition, the surfer independently develops models of boards for future victories. McNamara has already celebrated his half-century anniversary, but the athlete is not going to retire. And let it be gray hair in my head, but the demons of excitement, risk and adrenaline will not soon leave this energetic person, for whom all the beauty of the Universe lies in every new wave that has not yet bowed before him!
