DEAN KARNAZES – REAL EXTREME!
On August 23, 1962, the first-born, Dean Karnazes, was born into a working-class Greek family. A year later, Craig was born, and after three – Peri. For fourteen years, the family lived in Inglewood, a suburb of Los Angeles. The child’s running addiction appeared in early childhood. Passing into the third grade, he began to participate in short-distance competitions. Getting older, the boy more and more liked to test himself for endurance and unrestrainedly drawn to travel. At the age of eleven, he went through the entire Grand Canyon and climbed Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the Related States. And when the future marathoner turned 12, he covered 65 km in one day on a bicycle.
In his teens, the teenager met his first mentor, Jack McTavish. He liked his teaching methodology: “To get up before everyone else, train harder and stay longer than others. If you can’t give it 100, give it 120 percent. ” This approach brought Maktevisha Karnasizu, at that time a middle school student, a long-distance victory in California among older children. Seven days after these competitions, the ultramarathon family moved from Los Angeles to the outskirts of Southern California. Love not only for running, but also for surfing, Dean was connected with the crossers and their coach Benner Cumings. He forced to run barefoot along the coast in a column one after another or in dense rows of several people. The effect of his extraordinary technique is the absence of fatigue. And now – the time of the first victories. 1976 – endurance race. The goal – to run a circle – to get a dollar. The action was held for children from dysfunctional families. Athletes defeated 15 laps, Dean – 105. This was the last race of Dean led by Benner.
With the newly-made coach of the team, Karnasis could not establish relations and therefore the career of a runner is a thing of the past. He stopped running and completely blossomed: he became addicted to alcohol, had parties in the absence of his parents with his underage friends. This turbulent period of Dean’s life did not last long, he was replaced by a tragic one. In a car accident, at a very young age, his sister dies. This event made it possible to rethink everything and again return to the right path. Thanks to willpower and hard work, from 1982-1992, Karnasis received a bachelor’s degree, enrolled in graduate studies at the California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, then graduated from the McLaren School of Business and Management at the University of San Francisco, Master of Business Administration and six-figure salary, but from all this he did not feel that satisfaction, which, as it seemed to him, must be present.
And back to the sport
Once, in honor of his 30th birthday, Karnasis decided to master 30 miles. Thanks to this run, the man realized that running is his life.
Every year from 1995-2006, he became the owner of silver buckles at the distance of the Western States ultramarathon. In one day of this race it was necessary to overcome snow, high temperature, climb to a height of 5500 meters, descent to 7000 meters along mountain trails. In 2002, at a temperature of -25 C, Dean overcame the marathon at the South Pole. And in 2003 and 2004 he became the winner in the most difficult track and field race in the world along the Death Valley at a temperature of 49 C. Such solitude in which he stayed while he fled helped him to comprehend his attitude to life, to people. From 2000-2004, the athlete begins to help others by running. Dean’s repeated participation in Relay races helped raise the necessary amount of money for organ transplants for children. Soon Karnasis was born a new idea – to run 50 marathons in 50 states for 50 consecutive days. From September 17 to November 5, 2006, accompanied by his wife Julie, children of Alexandra and Nicholas, the athlete carried out the project “Endurance 50”, which gave him the status – the most famous runner in the world. But this is not the main record, according to the runner, the main thing is that he made most Americans believe in the possibility of human strength.
In 2004, the not-so-famous runner drew the attention of the media. GQ Magazine unanimously decides to give it a nomination – “The Best Body 2004”. After this award, he was awarded the title “Best Styer” three times in the magazine “Competitor”. The project “Endurance 50” gave him a victory in the nomination “Best Athlete 2007”. At the same time, Dean’s photos appear on the covers of the publications: Runners’ World, Outside, Wired magazine’s, he is invited to many television shows, and articles are written about him. Time magazine has deservedly named Dean Karnazes one of the most influential people in the world. After all, the ultramarathoner achieved career growth not only in running, but also in business, being the founder and head of a company that produces healthy nutrition.
