AHMED GAMAL GABR – REAL EXTREME!

An Egyptian diver who set the world record for immersion in water, was born in 1974. Little is known about the athlete’s childhood and youth. Parents of the future conqueror of the deep sea engaged in ordinary work and were no different from the rest of the Egyptians. Ahmed himself could never think of his future calling. In early childhood, he loved, like all boys, to play war games, climb trees and swim in the sea.

At the age of eighteen, after graduation, the young man thought about entering the local military academy. He had been preparing for a serious physical test for several years. Having put his body and mind in order, the young man overcame all entrance exams and was enrolled in the course.

Studying at the military academy was distinguished by a strict discipline of the students studying and their iron endurance. For all the years of his student life, Gabr passed many tests and exams. Already in 1994, he graduated from a higher educational institution and entered an adult independent life full of unexpected surprises.

In the same year, he got his first job as an official in the special forces department of Egypt. There he did not feel in his place and constantly looked towards the sea. Even in his youth, he became interested in diving. Deep immersion in water aroused in the “green” guy just unimaginable emotions. He never thought that a hobby could become his main profession.

Therefore, Ahmed for several more years served in the special forces and drove away thoughts of passion for himself. But unexpectedly for friends and relatives, he took the most important step in life, quitting his job. The young man did not drag out with a long job to a new place and decided to go diving on a regular basis, settling in a local club as an instructor.

He paid little money, but he was doing what he liked. Even with the appearance of his wife and children in his life, Ahmed did not abandon his true destiny and continued to work as an instructor at sea. After all, there is nothing better if the work brings pleasure.

Way to world record

Gabr learned about the direction of deep diving at a fairly young age. He never sought to be the first in the world. But a newspaper article that caught my eye changed his whole existence. After reading in the magazine, an article about overcoming a new deep immersion of 318 meters by the Portuguese athlete Nuno Gomez, Ahmed could not sit still and decided to break his colleague’s record at all costs.

Having cooled down a bit and getting in order, the man developed an initial plan of action and showed it to his best friend and immediate boss. The first thing Buddy Gabr was thinking about was the thought that his ward had gone crazy. But understanding the essence of the matter, the stern leader volunteered to help the diver realize his dream.

Now they were preparing to dive together and gathered a large team of scuba divers, doctors and scientists. Already in 2011, Ahmed was ready to set a new world record. He was confident in his own abilities and no longer needed time for preparation. But suddenly a strong crisis hit Egypt, which changed all the diver’s plans.

After waiting a little longer and gaining the initial form, Ahmed faced the following obstacle. He had to collect 10,000 pounds for the arrival of the international commission, which was to fix his possible record. Having found sponsors, the athlete found out that the judges would come for free, just to see with their own eyes the next madman.

In September 2014, Nuno Gomez’s world record officially fell. Ahmed Gabr managed to descend under the water at a distance of more than 325 meters. The dive itself took only fourteen minutes, and the diver had to climb into the air for about forty-eight hours. At this time, he ate baby food from a tube and replaced about ninety-two cylinders.

Today, Ahmed works as a diving instructor in the same place. In the near future he wants to set a new world record by conquering the deepest wreck.
